To rename Colston Hall 'panders to a tiny minority', according to a prominent Conservative councillor, who also slammed a historian's view that the venue is 'an affront' to Bristol.
Richard Eddy, who represents Bishopsworth, criticised prominent historian David Olusoga's view of Bristol as a city with racial divides 'worthy of the Deep South'.
Mr Eddy, the former Conservative leader in Bristol, said renaming Colston Hall would suggest Bristol was attempting to 'hide a shameful past'.
Debate surrounding the venue has simmered for years, with claims its name should be changed to remove reference to Edward Colston.
