Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak have begun a fight for every one of their party’s 200,000 grassroots votes as the “phoney war” of the Tory leadership campaign came to an end.
The Foreign Secretary wrote directly to members appealing for their backing, telling them “you can trust me to deliver”.
William Hague, who is backing Mr Sunak, recorded a video targeting Conservative grassroots, describing the former chancellor as “a highly disciplined, rational individual” and “the best hope” for the future of the Tory party.
