South African school where black children were separated in class from white children is investigated by officials after racism claims - as mother insists pupils were told where to sit.

A school in South Africa is facing an investigation after a picture showed black pupils sitting separately from white children on their first day back at school. 

The image, taken at Laerskool Schweizer-Reneke in the North West region, sparked outrage as the few black children in the class were sitting at their own separate table.  

The local education department has launched a probe and said an inspector would visit the school on Thursday morning. 

Officials were 'not sure whether the picture is fake or real', according to newspaper The Citizen.
