Professors feel threatened by ‘sinister’ letter demanding course syllabuses.
Academics at some of the UK's top universities say they feel threatened after a Conservative MP asked them to disclose which lecturers were teaching courses about Brexit.
In a “sinister” letter sent to vice-chancellors across the UK, Tory whip Chris Heaton-Harris also called for them to send him links to online lectures.
One lecturers’ union said the letter had the “acrid whiff of McCarthyism”.
Kevin Featherstone, a professor at the London School of Economics, said it was “clearly an implied threat that universities will somehow be challenged for their bias”.
More than 80% of academics voted to remain in the EU, according to a YouGov survey.
