A permanent memorial to iconic South African leader Nelson Mandela is to be created in Princes Park - with a new bridge built to access the tribute.
The memorial artwork will be created on the lake island at the Toxteth park, to tie in with what would have been the 100th birthday of the revered freedom fighter and philanthropist, who was made a Freeman of Liverpool in 1994.
While the memorial will be made by the Nelson Mandela Memorial Campaign (Mandela8), Liverpool City Council will spend more than £300,000 restoring the surrounding lake, including reinstating the water channel, putting in fishing platforms and creating the bridge link to the lake island to allow people to see the tribute up close.
