Chikwendu Kalu: “I’m not aware of plans to recall me,” says Abia speaker.

The petitioners urged Kalu to resign from the House to restore the image of the constituency or face a recall as enshrined in Section 110 of the 1999 Constitution.

The Speaker of the Abia House of Assembly, Chief Chikwendu Kalu (PDP), has said that he was not aware of any plans to recall him over alleged criminal act before his election to the house.

Kalu said this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Umuahia on Wednesday while reacting to the threat by some members of his Isialangwa South State Constituency to recall him.
NAN reports that six people from the constituency: Messrs Victor Irondi, Otuonye Alozie, Ngozi Udo, Sunday Onyendi, Udo Mba and Bridget Abel, spearheaded Kalu’s recall.
In a three-page petition made available to journalists, in Umuahia they stated that Chikwendu was involved “in a matter of stealing and theft” in 2013.
The petitioners stated that the speaker, who is also a legal practitioner, was given N1.2 million by his clients to assist them to buy a piece of land in Aba.
They further stated that two weeks later, he turned round to accuse his clients of breaking in and stealing the money from his office.
The petitioners urged Kalu to resign from the House to restore the image of the constituency or they would commence the process to recall him as enshrined in Section 110 of the 1999 Constitution.
The speaker said he did not steal his client’s money, saying that the money was carted away when his chamber in Aba was burgled, adding that he later refunded the money to his clients.
