Ten candidates will contest the Commons by-election on December 8 at Sleaford & North Hykeham, which was triggered by the resignation of Conservative MP Stephen Phillips over "irreconcilable policy differences" with the Government.

Mr Phillips supported Brexit but has criticised ministers' handling of the issue in Parliament, as well as their approach to child refugees and targeting of foreign aid.

The by-election is in a safe Tory seat where Mr Phillips had a majority of more than 24,000 at the 2015 general election.

It will come just a week after a by-election at Richmond Park caused by the resignation of Conservative MP Zac Goldsmith in protest at the Government's decision to back a third runway at Heathrow. The former Tory contender for London mayor is standing in that poll as an independent.

At the close of nominations for the Sleaford & North Hykeham contest, it was confirmed that the seat will be defended for the Conservatives by Dr Caroline Johnson, a consultant paediatrician. She stood for the party in Scunthorpe at the 2010 general election where she came second.
