MPs from across the party divide determined to remain accessible despite security concerns.
Scrapping constituency surgeries with members of the public would be a “tragedy” for democracy, Welsh MPs said as the country reels at the killing of Jo Cox.
The fatal shooting and stabbing of the Labour MP has forced politicians to consider the adequacy of security arrangements but there is determination not to make it harder for citizens to see their elected representatives.
Monmouth Conservative MP David Davies held a surgery in the morning and admitted that the events of Thursday were in his thoughts.
David Davies: 'We just have to carry on'
He said: “Of course, it’s very much in our minds... I think we just have to carry on.
“We had a phone call from the police, which is very kind of them, to ask if we were happy with everything but what can we do? It would be a terrible, terrible tragedy if we couldn’t have surgeries or if we had to have police standing around outside...
“It would be a terrible shame if we can’t be open and about everywhere because [of] a small minority of people who are willing to commit acts of violence.”
By David Williamson.
