Barack Obama is the first social media president, with access to a range of platforms that his team has harnessed to give the White House an audience that rivals or even exceeds those of traditional media outlets. On Thursday, the administration marked the fifth anniversary of one of its flagship digital products, West Wing Week, with a special celebrity-packed video in which Obama pays a little tribute at the four-minute mark to Frank Underwood from “House of Cards.”
After taking office, Obama hired the first-ever White House videographer, Arun Chaudary, who trailed the president and captured extensive behind-the-scenes footage.
“There wasn’t a regular vehicle for showing it to the public, and so he conceived of essentially a weekly wrap-up of the president’s activities behind the scenes,” White House press secretary Josh Earnest explained.
