Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) delegates from Gauteng chanted “Malema is a liar” on Monday night after revolting against the process used to select new candidates for leadership positions at the party’s national people’s assembly held at the University of Free State’s campus in Bloemfontein.
According to the City Press, what began as an organised conference was thrown into chaos after a list of 35 candidates for leadership positions started making the rounds.
Delegates, especially those from Gauteng, said the process was undemocratic.
“This was not democratic. They gave us this list. We did not nominate these people. Julius Malema is a liar,” one of them said.
Another accused Malema of using African National Congress (ANC) methods to secure top positions for his people.
“How can you impose a list to delegates. If he wants to go to the ANC, he must go.”
Malema tried to intervene by instructing delegates to file complaints with the steering committee, which would rule on it later.
But, disgruntled delegates walked out of the building and began chanting and burning their EFF attire outside.
Malema said he did not know why the delegates were reacting in this way.
“We are not going to nurse individuals’ feelings, anyone who gets offended by a democratic outcome has themselves to blame,” he said.
Malema explained that the names of those on the list were written down because some members could not pronounce the names of those in other provinces. He said nominated candidates were given the opportunity to decline or accept the nomination.
A number of delegates declined the nomination, citing the unhappiness of the delegates as a central cause.
The chosen candidates were congratulated on stage.
