First Public Works Employee Takes Nkandla Hit.

Director of projects at the department of public works, Itumeleng Molosi, was suspended for two months without pay after he pleaded guilty to irregularly appointing contractors and flouting procurement procedures during the upgrades to President Jacob Zuma’s private Nkandla home.

According to a report in the City Press on Sunday, “department insiders” said Molosi signed the deal last Monday after he wrote to the department of his intention to plead guilty.

He blamed himself and other officials for being pressured into taking short cuts because the project involved Zuma’s home.

City Press further reported 11 other officials may sign similar deals in order to avoid lengthy hearings.

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela released a damning report into the R246 million worth of security upgrades to Zuma’s home in March this year. In her report, she found Zuma and his family had unduly benefitted from some of the upgrades and recommended the president pay back a portion of the costs.

The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) meanwhile, has welcomed Molosi’s admission of guilt:
“He needs to be punished because when a person is guilty of contravening the rules and procedures, there has to be sanctions imposed,” added ACDP leader Kenneth Meshoe.
