“Whatever his class position now, [Malema] has recently been a capitalist,” National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) general secretary Irvin Jim reportedly said.
The Sunday Independent reported that Malema founded the Economic Freedom Fighters after being expelled as president of the African National Congress Youth League.
“While Numsa’s position is a clear class position, the position of the EFF is not. The EFF is explicitly anti-capitalist, but it is not socialist,” Jim was quoted as saying in his secretariat report.
“The organisation [EFF] is committed to a struggle against capitalism, but it does not clarify what kind of society it is struggling for.” According to the newspaper, Jim said it was “disturbing” that the EFF was marketed as a “working-class organisation”, but had a leader who had been a “director of companies which do work for government on the basis of tenders”.
This was relevant as it was EFF policy to rebuild the capacity of the state and do away with tenderpreneurs, he reportedly said.
Senior EFF leader, and former ANCYL spokesman, Floyd Shivambu reportedly declined to comment to the Sunday Independent.
“I don’t want to have those discussions in the media,” he was reported to have told the newspaper.
